NZ English / US English

I've been keeping track of a bunch of words/phrases that are different in New Zealand! I'll be updating this post as I go, because let me tell you, sometimes I feel like my students or family are speaking a different language! It's fun to decode words and laugh if I say something that doesn't make any sense here. :)

NZ word: US word

bush: forest

marking: grading (school work)

torch: flashlight

mat: classroom carpet

singlet: camisole

boot: car trunk

rubber: eraser

maths: math class

tick: check mark

clicking: snapping (fingers)

lolly: candy

takeaway: take out food

Vivid: brand of permanent marker

Jovie: brand of crayon/colored pencil-like drawing tool

There plenty of other different words that I will add as they come to me!
